Well that was a blast!
Its been a bit of gap between gigs but we kicked off a run of live performances with an appearance at Bury HMV on Saturday. Our lack of recent activity was apparent during set up when a panicked Graham couldn't figure out why his amp was totally dead. Cables checked, batteries swapped, but still no sound from his guitar until he finally noticed he'd jacked into the headphone socket instead of the guitar input! It was a warm enough day in Bury without that added sweaty panic!
The usual acoustic set was helped by the addition of a couple of effects pedals to boost the solo lines and add another layer of tech to go wrong! Thankfully it didnt apart from a dodgy cable which saw Robs guitar drop out part way through Camera Lens. He made up for it by playing the hell out of his guitar resulting in a lack of skin a a few drops of blood from his strumming fingers by the end of the number. So by half way through we had both blood and sweat but thankfully no tears.
We took the opportunity to debut a couple of new songs to the set with "Time" getting its first live outing, and the as yet unreleased "Last Farewell of Mary" being played in public for the first time. We still haven't finalised the recording of "Mary" but its shaping up to be a good live number. Inspired by the work of Robbie Burns it tells the tragic tale of Highland Mary in that classic jangly power pop tradition. We're hoping to release a sneak preview shortly.
A big thankyou for those of you who came out to see us play. It helps enormously in these Saturday afternoon gigs to have a few people come along to support us and encourage passing shoppers to stay a while and watch. We seemed to have a decent sized audience by the end of the set. We particularly enjoy the comments we overhear from the passing public: "are they famous then?".. well not yet.. and "he sounds like that Elvis Costello that lad"... we'll take that as a compliment!
Also a huge thanks to all the staff at HMV Bury and in particular the manager Steve who was a great host. We were made to feel very welcome all afternoon and we massively appreciate the opportunity that HMV give to local bands to play live and push new material. We are also nicking Steve's promotional tag line that he came up for us:
